Intelligence Explosion: What Happens When the World Cannot Adapt as Fast as AI Advances?

Imagine a breakthrough that would normally take five years arriving in a few months.

Then imagine the next breakthrough arriving faster still.

That is the possibility examined in a new paper by 22 AI researchers. As AI takes on more of the work of developing AI, each improved system could help build a stronger successor. The researchers call the resulting acceleration an โ€œintelligence explosion.โ€

It could bring extraordinary benefits. Scientific discoveries and new technologies might arrive years earlier.

But speed changes the risks, too.

A company may have to redesign how it works before its current transformation is complete. Workers may have less time to move into new roles. Cyber and biological threats could develop faster than institutions can respond. A small technological lead held by one company or country could become a profound imbalance of power.

The paper does not say this outcome is certain. Its evidence is preliminary, and significant bottlenecks may slow progress.

That uncertainty does not remove the leadership question.

Most organisations are built to make major decisions through annual plans, quarterly reviews, and changes that take years to implement. If AI progress suddenly compresses years into months, those response times become part of the risk.

The task now is to identify where faster progress could outrun our ability to understand, decide, and actโ€”while there is still time to strengthen that ability.

For leaders, this creates a practical task now:

Identify where AI progress could outpace your ability to respond. Watch for evidence that those assumptions are changing. Decide in advance who can actโ€”and when a high-risk activity must be paused.

We cannot set a reliable date for an intelligence explosion. We can test whether our organisations are prepared for a world in which the time available to decide becomes much shorter.

Which decision in your organisation would become too slow?
